Located in what is called the "Nob Hill Triangle" area, the Monte Vista Arts District is part of the history of Route 66, the Great American Highway. Dating back to the 1920's, the majority of the buildings were built between 1935 and 1955. In the 1980s the area was rehabilitated with an emphasis on the special qualities of the 1930s architecture and its pedestrian nature.

Marking the west end of the 15 block long Nob Hill Business District, it is distinguished by one of a pair of distinctive, neon-lighted arches (1994 best public art project award). Look for two other public art projects at the triangle (marked in blue on the map): "Star", a black patina bronze sculpture by Richard Beckman, and Sandblasted designs in glazed block walls at the Police substation by Joan Weissman.

Spend a leisurely afternoon in the Monte Vista Arts District,  enjoying the history and admiring the art of Albuquerque. Begin with lunch at the Chocolate Cafe and Bakery at 2933 Monte Vista, in one of the areas' historic buildings.
