Palette Contemporary Art & Craft
7400 Montgomery NE (Mossman Center)
855-7777
Mon-Sa 10-6, Sun by appointment
www.palettecontemporary.com
Palette Contemporary Art and Craft is pleased to present Margaret Neill's "Crossings and Digressions", a series of new oil paintings, through September 15, 2004. Palette will host an opening reception for the artist on Saturday, August 21, from 1-3 pm. Neill's fluid abstractions are at once tense and tranquil. The overlapping, layered oval shapes are built over time as the artist applies and removes paint from the surface, resulting in shapes that reveal one another in their transparency. Her abstract compositions and bold color reference a context of shifting energy, potential, and light that reflects her experience of living in an urban environment. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is present in numerous public and private collections.

"Forms and Fluid Composition" opens at Weyrich Artscrawl evening with an artists' reception for Lisa Chernoff, Sharon Schwartzmann, and Kathryn & Russell Spiering. Chernoff is a dichroic glass artist living in Placitas, NM. Her latest work explores the three dimensional and textural aspects of glass. Each finished piece is solid glass but is composed of numerous pieces before its first firing. Schwartzmann is a painter. Her medium is oil on canvas and her subject matter the female figure which she began to draw and paint over 40 years ago. She says it is the only subject matter which has interested her and remains vital to her visual expression. "Each figure becomes a metaphor for an aspect of my inner self." Kathryn and Russell Spiering are long time New Mexico residents whose jewelry has graceful, modernistic lines that accent the intrinsic beauty of the materials used. Russell cuts and carves most of the stones used and designs the gold and silver settings. He especially enjoys working with opals. Kathryn makes the gold and silver chains that accent their pendants from a single strand of wire, some of them also designed to wear alone.

There will be an opening reception for "Counterpoint", works by Margi Weir at the Inpost. One of our newest members, we are excited to have the Inpost Artspace open to our Artscrawl audience. The show opens August 20th and runs through October 8th. Margi Weir's acrylics are unique and exciting. They are part painting – part sculpture – and involve and imply action on the part of the artist, the viewer and the painting. The viewer sees a different piece depending on the viewer's position in relation to the painting. When it is dry, acrylic polymer is tougher and more flexible than oil paint. It has an inherent tensile strength that allows it some independence from the support. Individual marks or lines can be suspended in front of the picture plane, interacting with and relating to the painted surface of the canvas in a variety of ways. The surface painting in these pieces is made up of "snap lines". These lines are a record of the violent impact of paint with support, suggesting an event, an explosion, and a reverberation, yet the over-spray lends a softness to the line quality that is reminiscent of dry point intaglio. The combination of these snapped lines with layers of hanging or pinned paint pushes the boundaries of painting towards sculpture and fiber art.

Check out Abstract Works by John Mulvany, Diana Ruth and Molly Geissman in the Main Gallery; Invisible Ships by Virginia Baich in the North and South Galleries; and the Third Annual Member Group Show by the Digital Fine Art Society of New Mexico in the North and South Community Galleries. John, Diana and Molly met as students at UNM.  All three artists began painting later in life after being involved in other career pursuits. Though their styles are diverse, they have a common interest in creating paintings that are about process, paint and color. In Baich's Invisible Ships the subtle underlying patterns of wood hatchings, or repetitive dot configuration have the same effect that staring into the strong sunlight might evoke. There is a hallucinatory moment, where ghostly wave patterns activate the surface, and stretch beyond the limits of the canvas into infinity. The Digital Fine Arts Society of New Mexico was founded in May 2002 to share ideas and knowledge, to educate, to mount group exhibitions, and to promote the advancement of Digital Fine Art and digital fine artists in the state of New Mexico. The majority of DFAS-NM members are experienced fine artists, trained in traditional techniques of painting, drawing, mixed media, photography, and printmaking. They have come to the use of computer tools to create works of fine art out of excitement and love for this evolving creative medium. The group show is the opportunity for all members to display their latest work. Also check out Mystery School and Friends: Making Multi-disciplinary Magic at the Harwood Theatre. This is an eclectic collection of transformative dance music, community-inspired photography, bunches of birthdays, poetry, and delightful summer cuisine for dinner. Mystery School is a Desert Folk-Rock Originals band focused on creating healing music that is a catalyst for change.

Weems is proud to present the work of well known artist Nancy Young. Continuing a tradition in the evolution of her art, Young will be showcasing abstract acrylic paintings that emphasize the contemporary flavor of her work, while still retaining the patinas of antiquity. She still works mainly with her own handmade cast paper.  The short fibers from the cotton boll are beaten in her five gallon hydropulper to make a fiber pulp.  This is then cast and pressed into a mold she has previously created.  The dried work may use colors she has previously impregnated in the pulp, or be painted with copper and acids to emulate metal. Since 1975, Young has placed in over 46 regional, national and international juried exhibits, receiving Best of Show, multiple First Places and Purchase Awards. Don't miss the opportunity to meet the artist and see her newest work
