The Special Collections Library is a unique and historic building located at Edith and Central in the 19th century Huning-Highlands neighborhood. It replaced an 1890 brick schoolhouse that served as the city's library beginning in 1901. The original 1925 portion of the building, designed by Arthur Rossiter, is an excellent example of "Spanish-Pueblo Revival" architecture. Famous Taos artist Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) painted the decorations on the interior walls and posts. The belfry over the porch holds the cast iron bell from the old schoolhouse. This was the city's only library until 1948 and served as its main library until 1975. Featuring materials on genealogy and New Mexico history and culture (including early newspapers from the territorial period in New Mexico), the Library is open 10-6 Tuesday through Saturday.
