Dextra Quotskuyva, great granddaughter of Nampeyo, is arguably the most famous living Hopi potter. She has studied all the known pieces by Nampeyo of Hano as well as the old Sikyaki pots in museums and photographs, and has an encyclopedic memory of the designs. She takes these traditional designs and uses them in imaginative new ways, giving her pottery a look all its own. This seed pot uses a beautiful half-and-half design with traditional family eagle tail in the red and a graceful childlike hand reaching outward against the stippled buff, in the gesture of Michaelangelo's "Creation". White spots on the eagle tail are raised to the touch. The four patch swirling topknot is a modern interpretation of an old Nampeyo bird topknot feather design. Andrews carries pottery by Dextra and many other members of the Nampeyo family.. |
