ARTSCRAWL, February 18, 2005, 5-9pm - An Adventure in Art and Neon

Begin your evening with a short program on the importance of Route 66 as a mecca for neon at 5:30pm at the historic El Rey Theater, 622 Central SW. View the award winning documentary “Route 66 in New Mexico” and help the El Rey celebrate its 64th Anniversary. Then make your way along Central Avenue/Route 66 for a self-guided art and neon tour. The Historic Route 66 Map & Guide published by the City of Albuquerque will be available at the El Rey and in the galleries. For some history of the El Rey Theater and its neon restoration project go to http://www.rt66nm.org/elrey.html.

The more historic NEON signs (like the one at the El Rey) are only scattered remnants along the Route 66 Corridors. Those that still function and remain lit stand as solitary beacons to a less complicated time when the road was a place for adventure. The preservation of Albuquerque’s historic neon will retain for the present and future generations a unique art form that has a special place in the history of the city.

Other Neon of Special Note: In 1994 the City funded a Gateways Project for the Nob Hill district along Central Avenue. You will see two arches over Central, one at Girard and the other at Washington. The cement structures are embedded with tiles and purple neon and spanning the street are aluminum lattice garnished with green neon. The historic Valentine’s Diner at Triangle Park (next to the Girard Gateway) was renovated for use as a police substation for Nob Hill. A neon APD shield and neon entrance sign were added. The bus stop on the NE side of Central sports “Nob Hill” in blue neon along its top. Triangle Park was dedicated in 1997.
