Old Town Artscrawl, January 16

Rita Bard and Louisa Barkalow present Tripping on the Color Wheel at ArtHaus66 Gallery (www.arthaus66.com). This two artist show that injects color and hope in an otherwise bleak time in our collective history. Rita Bard is a Santa Fe artist who favors flat fields of bright colors and enigmatic narratives in her paintings. Louisa Barkalow is a painter and political activist who offers a glimpse of hope in her bold, energetic, large scale floral paintings. Show runs through February.

New Work by New Artists and New Year’s Party at New Grounds Gallery (www.newgroundsprintshop.com). Runs through January 31.

Stephanie Lerma’s Repetitive Longings with cast and handmade paper hangings and sculpture opens at artspace 116 (www.artspace116.org) on January 16, running through March 13.

Looking Ahead: Preparatory sketches and Drawings at Matrix Fine Art (www.matrixfineart.com) through January 31

Chicana Badgirls: Las Hociconas (January 17 – March 21, 2009) at 516 Arts (www.516arts.org) with loudmouth backtalking women, bad mannered mujeres, strong Chicana/Latina women telling it like they see it. Featured artists are from New Mexico, Texas and California. Curated by Delilah Montoya & Laura Perez. Special programs in conjunction with Women and Creativity series organized by the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

Annual Holiday Sale with all art under $250 continues at Fisher Gallery.

February 2009

Northeast Heights Artscrawl, February 20

Weyrich Gallery (www.weyrichgallery.com) opens Back & Forth First Friday evening with an Artscrawl reception on the 20th. This is a one person show of Debora Wayne’s kiln-formed art glass. Show closes March 20.

Weems Galleries (www.weemsgallery.com) announce Glitz, jewelry and D. Griffith at their Old Town Location February 6-28 and Masters of the Sandias with Murray, Stouffer and Kelly at Louisiana Plaza with an opening February 7.

Chicana Badgirls continues at 516 Arts (www.516arts.org) with a screening of the new short narrative film about the dual nature of Chimayó, New Mexico as a place of both healing and destruction, followed by a talk with screenwriter Art Corriveau and director Kevin Jaramillo. Saturday, February 21.

Shrines: Monotypes by Dan Noyes at New Grounds Gallery (www.newgroundsprintshop.com) opens First Friday and runs through February 29.

Lush: Abstract Paintings by Sally Condon, Kuzana Ogg, & Susan Reid at Matrix Fine Art

Arts Alliance Gallery (www.abqarts.org) hosts Rainbow Artists in February 6-March 2 with We Love Red featuring fine art and craft and fashion - Goddess Garb by Ginger Quinn. There will be receptions on both First Friday and for the NE Heights Artscrawl.

Through February 22 enjoy paintings by Xuan Chen at N4th Gallery (www.vsartsnm.org). Then, February 27-March 29 Joe Julan’s Norway photography exhibit will come to N4th along with Global Dance Fest 2009.

Weems Galleries (www.weemsgallery.com) presents Crosses by New Mexico Santeros at their Old Town Location March 6-31 and an Anniversary Show at Louisiana Plaza March 14-21.

Stephanie Lerma’s Repetitive Longings continues at artspace 116 (www.artspace116.org) through March 13. On March 20, Ann Dunbar’s solo show opens with a Downtown Artscrawl reception and will run through May 1.

A Fowl Affair: Monotypes and Mezzotints by Elizabeth Kassay at New Grounds Gallery (www.newgroundsprintshop.com) opens First Friday and runs through March 28.

Landscapes by Frank McCulloch and Terra Cotta by Sara D’Alessandro at Matrix Fine Art (www.matrixfineart.com) through March 28. First Friday is also the Second Anniversary celebration.

Sumner & Dene (www.sumnerdene.com) will exhibit weaver Connie Enzmann-Forneris in March with an opening First Friday. Sumner & Dene (www.sumnerdene.com). Abstract painter Robert Redus opens March 30 and closes April 21.

Sarah Rose is featured at Chroma Studios & Gallery (www.chromastudios.wordpress.com) in March with a First Friday reception. Enjoy an intimate concert featuring Matt Jones, singer/songwriter, on March 20.

Self Evident exhibits at ArtHaus66 Gallery (www.arthaus66.com) with an opening reception Saturday, February 28 and a First Friday reception March 6. The exhibit includes local, well known and well loved artist Carol Sanchez with her intriguing mezzotints and new sculptural work - Paige Williams whose wood panels and latex paint produce large areas of flat color and candid, playful shapes that are her narrative - Ali Gallo who finds inspiration in mangled and time worn pieces of scrap metal that she reassembles into magnificent gentle giants. The show runs through March 22.

Chicana Badgirls continues at 516 Arts (www.516arts.org) with Hispanic poets: Jessica Helen López, Michelle Otero and Socorro “Cora” Romo, with Levi Romero and Richard Vargas on Saturday, March 7 at 8pm and a Panel Discussion with Delilah Montoya, Dr. Laura E. Perez, Holly Barnet-Sanchez and guest artist Alma Lopez discussion Chicana feminist art today on Saturday, March 14, 2pm. Downtown Artscrawl open house on the 20th.

Lena Bartula will show at ArtHaus66 Gallery (www.arthaus66.com). Bartula has been a visual artist for more than thirty years, Bartula’s repertoire includes painting, installation, constructions, book art and mixed media. For the last several years, she also includes writing among her passions. Her art often combines imagery and pattern, textured layers, and words or single letters in English or Spanish. She is inspired by her own poetry and that of other writers. Show continues through April..

Weyrich Gallery (www.weyrichgallery.com) opens Expressive and Aesthetic Ends First Friday evening. Featured are Judith Duff (wood-fired pottery), Kevin Crowe (pottery), Jack Troy (potter, poet, teacher), Susan Linnell-Zenga (paintings).

Don Schlegel’s sketches and drawings will be exhibited as part of The Architect as Artist series at AIA Gallery (www.aiaabq.org). The show opens First Friday and runs through May.

The New Mexico Polymer Clay Guild will exhibit at Arts Alliance Gallery (www.abqarts.org) April 3-27 with a First Friday reception.

Paula Manning-Lewis is featured at Chroma Studios & Gallery (www.chromastudios.wordpress.com) in April with a First Friday reception. This is the one year anniversary of the gallery and an Open Studio event. Enjoy an intimate concert featuring Travis James Manning, singer/songwriter, on April 17.

Sumner & Dene (www.sumnerdene.com) presents abstract painter Robert Redus March 30-April 21. There will be a First Friday artists reception. On April 24, New Mexico Skies opens featuring acrylic painter Angus Macpherson, pastel artist Katherine Irish Henry and oil painters Jeannie Sellmer and Frank McCulloch - all four known for their billowing clouds, dramatic sunsets and southwestern skies. Opening reception Friday, May 1, 5-9pm. Show closes May 30.

Weems Galleries (www.weemsgallery.com) will exhibit the work of Andrew Rodriguez and Devin McDermott at their Old Town Location April 3-30 and Steve Hanks at Louisiana Plaza with an opening April 3.

516 Arts (www.516arts.org) in Albuquerque and LA Artcore in Los Angeles will work together to create one exhibition in two cities, West Southwest: ABQ-LA Exchange. Exhibits run April 4 through May 16.

Palette Contemporary Art and Craft (www.palettecontemporary.com) presents Steve Lewis: Past Perfect. This photographic journey through modern America opens May 15 with an Artscrawl reception. They will also feature a selection of Modernist functional objects and jewelry ca. 1950s-1970s.

This is a group show of a collective of local artists who have been exploring their own transitions between realism and abstraction.
